Join the Waiting Room Team – Sound Technician Role.
Hello, I’m Phil Mill and over the past year I’ve managed the sound as the Audio Visual Technician at the Waiting Room - a space run by people who care about supporting unique local culture, creativity and art.
During this time I have also completed an MA in Sound Arts in London - developing a sound arts practice that focuses on the sonic environment, its (acoustic) ecology bearing in mind its social, historical, economic and psycho-geographic factors and how it relates to a places culture or geography.
I am also a musician who performs or has performed in a few local bands that have performed in the Essex and Suffolk areas. (The Wingless Heron, Liatris Trio) I occasionally perform live music mainly in the area of experimental electronic/electro-acoustic music.
My role at the Waiting Room has naturally changed and adapted with the space as the project has found its feet. Now as the project grows and reopens in March 2015, I am looking for a number 2.
We are looking to take on a volunteer who would like to learn and develop their skills as a Sound Technician, the position starts as a 3 month voluntary trainee that has the potential to go onto being a paid role.
The Role:
The Sound/A/V Technician involves mainly working for live music events, showcasing a wide range of genres from Metal (Through Chris Moore and Colchester’s DIY underground music scene), folk music (assisted by Fish Claw) rock/pop music organised by Ben Howard who is supporting emerging talent and more.
We have also hosted a few festivals including: The Lightbulb Festival run by James Sarek, an alternative music festival that holds a wide range of different musicians, artists and performers within Colchester and beyond, an all day festival dedicated to International Womens Day and all-dayers by Oxjam, there has also been experimental music events in the past under the name of Artichoke and regular ”alternative” DJ nights.
This role is often in a fast-paced working environment that requires you to think on your feet as well as learn new things on the job, constantly facing a wide range of new challenges as new events take place that are often unique and exciting.
The best part of this role is knowing that you aren’t working alone and all people who contribute towards the project (event hosts, visitors and staff) are all working together to create a unique and self-sustaining arts space.
This role will be a shared with me but there will be times where you may have to work independently, it would be a great position for a student who also has an open mind and the willingness to learn and develop in a practical and experimental environment. You will be required approximately 1 day a week, mainly on Saturday nights, as this is our live music night.
Anyone wishing to express an interest should apply by sending a CV and covering letter to [email protected]
