Hacking @ Dorkbot
We’re hosting a Hacking themed Dorkbot on Wednesday 19th November.
‘A hacker is a person who enjoys exploring the limits of what is possible, in a spirit of playful cleverness…. Hackers are those who modify hardware (not limited to computers) to expand capabilities’ via wiki.
If you’ve never been to Dorkbot before, we’re offering the first 50 newcomers a free drink. Come along on the night and tell the bar staff: “I’m a Dorkbot virgin” and we’ll offer you a free beer or glass of wine. Better be quick though, it’s first come first serve.
Our main speaker is Katy Beale of Caper, an innovation agency who experiment with prototypes and develop digital thinking for a range of clients across the creative, culture and technology sectors. Their own ventures include the open data initiative Culture Hack, the grassroots network Coding for Kids, and Happenstance, a technologist-in-residence programme. Katy will be talking about hacking with open data, when hacks work and when they don’t and collaborative models for experimentation.
Our second speaker Paul Probert who will be talking about Hack Essex who are running Civic Camp, a volunteer-driven concept, using our collective talents to bring about real change. Set over a whole weekend and hosted by Anglia Ruskin University, they aim to answer the question “How can technology and information help people with Learning Disabilities live life to the full?
We are also calling for anyone else who has something hack related to share? Have you hacked something? Are you an avid digital creator, modifier? Got an idea how we can improve Colchester using technology, coding and collective talents?
Or, if public speaking isn’t your thing, each month there is also loads of room for small, informal breakout sessions after speakers, during the social part of the event where you can demonstrate, show and tell or get some help on your project….
Email [email protected] with any ideas.
This event is 100% free to all and Your Bar will be open serving drinks throughout the evening.
RSVP via facebook.

WHAT IS DORKBOT?
Hosted on the third Wednesday of each month as part of The Waiting Room’s weekly Maker Wednesday. Dorkbot is fun, super informal, open door meetup for anyone, who like us, has an interest in technology. Be it as a professional, novice or amateur (Dorkbot’s official strapline is ‘people doing strange things with electricity’).
Whether you are a 12 year old equivalent to Tim Berners-Lee, the next Julian Assange working quietly on the news desk at the Daily Gazette, a Soldering Guru, Stratgeist to the internet stars in the Big Smoke, Content Architect for a local start up, UXer, UIist, Drupal Dreamer or PHP Muncher. I need your help.
